Redness concerns

Redness typically appears on the nose and cheaks, and it is tyically an issue for paler people, however people of all complexions can experience it. It can be a result of chronic conditions like rosacea, flushing or even a damged skin barrier. All these cause blood vessels dialate, resulting in redness appearing on the surface of the skin.
Why does redness happen?
Blood vessels dialate allowing more blood to reach the surface of the skin. The reason for this varies greatly. In general, these blood vessels widen becuase of the skin being stressed of infalmmed in some way. Rosacea is an example of a skin disease which can not be cured but can be explained.
Rosacea and flushing
¨Rosacea is a type of persistent inflimmation. It is characterized by having flare ups which occur in cycles. In order to diagnose rosacea, one should speak to a dermatologist. There are four subgroups of rosacea:
- Erythematotelangiectatic rosacea is associated with flushing and generic redness
- Papulopustular rosacea is associated with acne and breakouts.
- Rhinophyma is the thickening of the skin on the nose, which can make it seem more bulbous.
- Ocular rosacea is concentrated near the eye area.
Rosacea is hereditary, and is usually due to a genetically overactive immune system and heightened inflimmation response. However, there are certain triggers which cause flare ups. These include alcohol, stress, sun damage, fragrance, and spicy foods. These triggers vary from person to person, but lifestyle changes in accordance to your skin are helpful in order to treat the rosacea.
Acne related redness
Redness the specifically happens along with or around acne spots is caused by the skins response to sensing infammation. When the pores are clogged with oil build up, and dead skin cells. Propionibacterium acnes- a type of bacteria, thrives on the acne prone skin. The skin evaluates the bacteria as harmful and immune cells respond.
These immune cells release chemicals, such as cytokines. This immune reaction increases blood flow, and causes swelling, heat and redness near pimples.
Barrier damage
When the skin barrier is comprimised and made weaker, it becomes more sensitive to irritants. Burning and tightness of the skin usually accompany barrier damage. When the barrier becomes damaged, irritants penetrate more easily. A compromised skin barrier can be caused by stripping it via excessive cleansing, not properly hydrating and moisturizing it everyday, or applying aggresive ingredients onto the skin. Usually with this concern it is ideal to focus one's skincare routine to 3 simple and effective steps.
What products can help?
While redness is difficult to treat, there are certain gentle products can be helpful. Niacinamide has beneficial anti-inflammatory properities. It reduces the chemical released by the immune system: cytokines, and helps to strengthen the skin barrier. Aloe Vera is an example of a soothing ingredient. It helps to calm irritation and protect the skin from damage with it's antioxidants.
Professional laser treatment are also a common choice to reduce redness. If you are interested in such a treatment, contact a dermatologist.
